Five Fast Facts About Ovarian Cancer

Get ovarian cancer awareness gear at MyWalkGear.com!Are you wearing teal this month? It’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, so we thought we’d take a second to spotlight an incredibly important cause. Here are five quick facts that will give you an overview of ovarian cancer’s impact:

  1. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer among women, and it causes more deaths than any other kind of reproductive cancer. It is estimated that 1 in every 72 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in their lifetime.
  2. The single highest risk factor for the disease is having a family history of it. Genetics triple your risk of getting ovarian cancer. With that being said, only 85-90% of ovarian cancer cases have a genetic link.
  3. Studies have shown that the risk of ovarian cancer seems to increase with the number of times that she ovulates in her lifetime. It is thought that anything that reduces the amount of times you ovulate, then, can similarly reduce your risk for ovarian cancer.
  4. Common symptoms include pelvic discomfort or pain, abdominal bloating, a persistent lack of energy and loss of appetite or quickly feeling full.
  5. Ovarian cancer is difficult to diagnose at an early stage, as there is no universal screening technique that spots it at this time. Most of the time, ovarian cancer isn’t caught until the tumor on the ovary has grown large.

Now that you’re in the know about ovarian cancer, you can help show your support for the cause! Participate in a walk, shop our ovarian cancer awareness gear, and get people to join the cause in a fight for a cure.
